Postcard 1923 Perugia San Pietro Church Choir Lectern RPPC Italy Roma

Perugia, Italy1923Pre-linenGood

Mailed from Rome in April 1923 to a "John" in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this striking black-and-white real-photo postcard captures the magnificent carved wooden choir lectern of the Church of San Pietro in Perugia — a Renaissance masterpiece executed by the masters Ambrogio, Battista, and Lorenzo, its panels teeming with biblical scenes in relief, its pyramidal music stand surmounted by fantastic carved ornament and flanked by bold portrait busts at the corners. The detail image reveals the extraordinary sculptural density of the piece: figures carved in deep relief occupy roundels on the cabinet base, while lions and grotesques populate the lectern support, a tour de force of 15th–16th century Umbrian woodcarving. John's correspondent wrote in flowing script on April 11, 1923 — "11 Aprile 1923" is legible in the message — and the card was franked with a 60-centime Italian stamp bearing the profile of King Vittorio Emanuele III, cancelled at the Rome railway post office (Roma Ferrovia) on 11 April 1923.
