Postcard Venice Doge's Palace Neptune Sculpture Courtyard RPPC Italy c1930s

Venice, Italy1930Pre-linenGood

Shot from the loggia of the Doge's Palace in Venice, this arresting real-photo postcard presents Jacopo Sansovino's monumental marble Neptune — seen dramatically from behind, his muscular back and powerful stance filling the frame — presiding over the Scala dei Giganti (Giants' Staircase) courtyard, the Gothic arches of the palace arcade receding in elegant rhythm behind him. The rear view, rarely chosen, transforms a familiar landmark into something almost sculptural-abstract: the god of the sea appears to survey his watery domain, the richly carved doorway at left providing a counterpoint of Renaissance ornamental density. The detail crop draws the eye to the extraordinary anatomical modeling of Sansovino's craft — the play of shadow across Neptune's back muscles ranks among the finest figure work of the High Renaissance. The reverse is blank, printed on plain postcard stock with a penciled notation "No" in the address column.
