Staring into the middle distance with the cold intensity of a man who has already made his decision, Michelangelo's marble Brutus commands this rare early real-photo postcard — one of the Florentine Renaissance's most politically charged sculptures, captured in luminous silver-gelatin detail at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello around the turn of the twentieth century. Michelangelo began the bust circa 1539 and left it deliberately unfinished, a choice that only deepens its brooding psychological power; the partially draped toga, the tightly curled hair roughed out by a pupil, and that upward, almost defiant gaze have made it an enduring symbol of republican virtue and tyrannicide. The publisher N.P.G.
