Postcard Pompeii Public Baths Tepidarium Terme Pubbliche Italy Trampetti

Pompeii, Italy1925Pre-linenGood

The warm, amber-toned silence of Pompeii's ancient public baths fills this evocative sepia postcard — ornate stucco telamones (male supporting figures) line the walls of the tepidarium, the moderately heated room of the Forum Baths, their arms raised as if still holding the vaults of a lost ceiling, while an iron railing installed by early excavators keeps modern visitors at a respectful distance from the marble bench that once warmed the backs of Roman bathers. The Forum Baths (Terme del Foro) at Pompeii are among the best-preserved Roman bath complexes in the world, and this view of the men's tepidarium — with its extraordinary stucco decoration intact after nearly 2,000 years — was a perennial favourite for tourist postcards from the late 19th century onward. Published by Domenico Trampetti of Naples (card no. 76957), a successor firm to V. Trampetti, this card appears to date from the 1920s–1930s based on the divided back format and Trampetti publishing lineage. A pencilled "154" on the reverse is likely a dealer's stock price or lot number. Unused and unposted, the card retains beautiful sepia tonal warmth.
