Antique & Vintage Postcards

Frozen in sepia stillness, the colonnaded courtyard of the Stabian Baths stretches across this atmospheric early photograph — one of Pompeii's oldest and most complete Roman bathing complexes, buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD and excavated from the 18th century onward. The row of slender Doric columns casts long shadows across the palaestra floor while the elaborately frescoed back wall, still vivid with painted panels and a grand arched entrance, hints at the luxury of daily Roman life. Published under the official imprimatur of the Royal Excavations of Pompeii ("RR. Scavi di Pompei"), this card bears the ornate Art Nouveau cartouche of P. Beccarini, Editore, catalog number 152, and was never mailed — leaving both sides crisp and collector-clean.
