Postcard Pompei Casa di Lucrezio Caro Garden Ruins Italy c1910 Trampetti

Pompei, Italy1910Pre-linenGood

A haunting sepia-toned view peers through the ruined doorway of Pompeii's Casa di Lucrezio Caro, where crumbling brick walls and a roofless staircase frame a garden sanctuary at the rear — its centrepiece a white marble statue standing in a shell-topped niche, steps descending before it as if inviting a visitor who will never come. Agave plants push up between the ancient paving stones, and small decorative figures cluster at the base of the niche, hinting at the garden's original role as an outdoor sanctuary. Excavated in the 19th century, the house was attributed by early archaeologists to a local magistrate and poet, though the identification remains debated. The close-up detail card reveals the garden niche and flanking column stumps in sharper relief, exposing the rough opus incertum masonry of the garden wall and the distant hillside beyond — a reminder that Pompeii sits in an open landscape, not a museum vault. Published by Domenico Trampetti of Naples, this early real-photo style sepia card predates World War I, making it a desirable pre-linen specimen for collectors of Campanian antiquity and early Italian photographic postcards.
