Postcard c1902 Exeter Guildhall High Street Tuck Oilette Art Card England

Exeter, England1902Pre-linenGood

Bustling with Edwardian street life, this luminous Tuck Oilette captures Exeter's magnificent Guildhall presiding over the High Street — its 1593 Renaissance facade of Perpendicular Gothic columns projecting boldly over the pavement while a horse-drawn covered wagon negotiates the cobbles and a man in mustard trousers strides past carrying what appears to be a life-ring. Ladies in vivid red and green skirts animate the left foreground outside a striped-awning shop, while the misty distance dissolves into impressionistic blues. The Guildhall, noted on the reverse as erected in 1464 and restored in 1720, is one of England's oldest municipal buildings — and its portrait painter H. B. Wimbush brings a warm, almost theatrical atmosphere to what was a thoroughly working commercial street. The card back credits the original painting to H. B. Wimbush and identifies it as Postcard 7013 in the "Exeter" Oilette series.
