Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sheffield's Fitzalan Square hums with mid-century urban energy in this colourised Valentine's "Valesque" card — double-decker trams dominate the right foreground on gleaming rails, vintage automobiles cluster around the central memorial statue, and pedestrians in heavy coats animate the wide pavement beneath an overcast sky. The large Art Deco or Modernist commercial building to the left bears a prominent "C&A" signage, placing this view squarely in the late 1930s to early 1940s when C&A was a fixture of British high streets. Most extraordinarily, the reverse carries a printed quotation from the Prime Minister — almost certainly Winston Churchill: "This is a time for everyone to stand together, and hold firm!" — a wartime morale message that transforms this ordinary city-view card into a small artefact of the Home Front. Sheffield, heavily bombed in the Blitz of December 1940, makes this quote especially poignant.
