Antique & Vintage Postcards

In one of the most iconic compositions in Italian topographic postcard history, Mount Vesuvius erupts in apocalyptic splendour over the Bay of Naples — the volcano's twin peaks silhouetted against a churning orange-red inferno while fishing boats with lateen sails glide across water that shimmers blood-red with reflected lava-light, and in the foreground two oarsmen in a low skiff pull steadily across the incandescent bay as though this terror were merely another night's work. Published by S. Hildesheimer & Co. and printed in Italy, this chromo reproduction captures the tradition of Neapolitan volcanic painting stretching back to Pietro Fabris and Joseph Wright of Derby in the 18th century — a visual language of sublime danger that drew Grand Tourists by the thousands. The divided-style back with "For Inland Use Only" places this in the early UB-transition era. A companion piece to the close-cropped Vesuvius view in this same batch.
