Postcard Alpine Village Crucifix Dolomites Art H Treiber Pre-Linen Hildesheimer

Dolomites / South Tyrol, Austria-Italy border region1904Pre-linenGood

Bathed in the bright alpine light of the South Tyrol, this luminous art postcard captures a quintessential wayside crucifix — a wooden Bildstock sheltering a figure of Christ — standing at a mountain crossroads above a broad green valley, while a woman in traditional Tyrolean dress and a child pause beneath it, dwarfed by the jagged Dolomite peaks crowning the sky. The scene is the work of artist H. Treiber, whose confident brushwork conveys both the devotional intimacy of Catholic mountain culture and the grand theatricality of the Alps in a single composition. Such roadside crosses, called "Marterl" or "Wegkreuz," were integral to Bavarian and Tyrolean village life and their appearance in postcard art reflected enormous Edwardian appetite for picturesque continental scenery. Published by S. Hildesheimer & Co., London and Manchester, and printed at their Bavarian works — likely Nürnberg or Munich — this card is a fine example of early colour half-tone art postcard production at its most ambitious. The undivided-back-era phrasing and card stock place it at the very opening of the Edwardian golden age of postcards.
