Postcard Strand Gate Ellen Terry Cottage Winchelsea Sussex Art Totter c1905

Winchelsea, East Sussex, England1905Pre-linenGood

Drenched in English summer green, this exquisite art postcard depicts the Strand Gate at Winchelsea in East Sussex — one of three surviving medieval town gates of the ancient Cinque Port — its ancient brick arch almost entirely consumed by a tumbling cascade of ivy and creeper, while the red-tile-roofed cottage nestled to its left is none other than the home once associated with the celebrated Victorian actress Ellen Terry, whose connection to the village made Winchelsea a minor pilgrimage destination for theatre devotees in the Edwardian era. The artist signing as "Totter" — a pseudonym used by a Raphael Tuck-adjacent illustrator active in the early 1900s — captures the drowsy, overgrown charm of the scene with assured watercolour-style technique reproduced in the "Pinachrome" process. Published in the British Isles only series noting "½d Inland / 1d Foreign" stamp rates, the back places this firmly in the pre-1918 era. Ellen Terry, who died in 1928, was arguably the most famous English actress of the Victorian age, and any postcard connecting her name and residence is of real interest to theatre history collectors.
