Postcard 1904 Cadgwith Cornwall Channel View "Jotter" G Smith Pinachrome

Cadgwith, Cornwall, England1904Pre-linenExcellent

Perched at the top of a steep cobbled lane tumbling toward the English Channel, a cheerful Cornish woman in a white apron and cap chats with a young girl in a straw boater carrying a wicker basket — beyond them, whitewashed and thatched cottages cling to the cliff's edge above a shimmering sliver of sea where sailing boats dot the horizon, seabirds wheeling overhead in a cloud-streaked sky. Cadgwith is one of the most picturesque fishing coves on the Lizard Peninsula, and this Edwardian watercolour by the beloved artist "Jotter" (Walter Hayward Young) captures the village's dramatic topography and its working-class domestic life with warm, sun-drenched romanticism. Published by G. Smith in the "Pinachrome Series," this card was never posted and retains excellent colour fidelity across its half-tone printed surface — a charming time-capsule of a Cornwall that still looks much the same today.
