Postcard 1902 Nether Stowey Coleridge's House Somerset Frith's Series

Nether Stowey, Somerset, England1902Pre-linenGood

The modest two-storey stone cottage in Nether Stowey, Somerset where Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan" stands here with quiet dignity — its plain Georgian facade, worn stone steps, and small carved plaque beside the front door already marking it as a literary shrine even in this early Edwardian photograph, hand-tinted in delicate sepia and rose to give warmth to the rough Quantock stonework. Coleridge lived here from 1797 to 1799 in what he called a "dear cottage," hosting William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy who walked over regularly from Alfoxton Park nearby; together the two poets would walk the surrounding hills and coast, conversations that gave birth to the Lyrical Ballads and launched English Romantic poetry. The National Trust acquired the cottage in 1909, and this Frith's Series card — published by F. Frith & Co. of Reigate and printed in Saxony, catalogue number 35762 — predates that acquisition, capturing the building while still in private hands and bearing a sign that appears to advertise public viewings.
