Postcard 1904 Minehead Church Town Somerset England Frith's Series Coloured

Minehead, Somerset, England1904Pre-linenFair-Good

A woman in a pink coat and a small boy stand quietly in the sunlit lane of Church Town, Minehead — one of Somerset's oldest and most picturesque quarters — as the medieval tower of St Michael's Church looms above the rooftops in this delicately hand-coloured Edwardian postcard. Frith's photographer climbed into the narrow, stone-walled alley sometime around the turn of the twentieth century to record the whitewashed cottages with their leaded windows, a scene almost unchanged since Tudor times. The two figures ground the composition in everyday life: a mother and child, perhaps returning from market, caught for eternity by the camera. Minehead's Church Town was a favourite subject for topographical publishers because it offered that rare combination of genuine antiquity and photogenic charm, and this Frith example, unused and still crisp despite some edge wear, preserves a moment before the motor car altered the village forever.
