Postcard 1902 Old Flemish Houses Dedham Essex England G. Smith Pinachrome Art

Dedham, Essex, England1902Pre-linenExcellent

Blossom-laden apple trees arch over a sun-dappled lane in Dedham, Essex, where a woman in a red bodice carries a wicker basket while two rosy-cheeked girls in pinafores and red bonnets play nearby — a quintessentially Edwardian vision of English rural idyll rendered in rich chromolithographic colour. The "Old Flemish Houses" of the title are the ancient timber-framed and plastered weavers' cottages that reflect Dedham's prosperous cloth-trade heritage, when Flemish immigrants transformed the Stour Valley into England's foremost wool district in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Published by G. Smith of Stroud Green Road, London, in his "Pinachrome Series" and printed in England, this painterly card occupies a charming middle ground between art print and topographical postcard. The Dedham Vale — later immortalised by John Constable — attracted Edwardian artists and tourists alike, making this an appealing crossover piece for collectors of Essex county cards, Constable Country ephemera, and Edwardian genre scenes.
