Postcard 1902 Pevensey Castle Sussex England W.H. Borrow Watercolour Art B&W

Pevensey, East Sussex, England1902Pre-linenGood

A lone shepherd drives his flock along a rutted track toward the brooding Roman and Norman ruins of Pevensey Castle, Sussex — the very shore where William the Conqueror landed in 1066 — in this atmospheric watercolour reproduction postcard by the artist W. H. Borrow. The crumbling keep and curtain walls rise against a dramatic cloudy sky in warm autumnal tones, cattle dotting the marshes to the left and a church spire peering above the village rooftops to the right. Borrow's loose, painterly style evokes the great English landscape tradition, and his Pevensey composition is particularly charged with historical resonance: the castle saw military use in every conflict from Roman times through both World Wars. Published by the B. & W. Series of Hastings, this is an early undivided-back card — the address-side wording "in the United Kingdom only" and the format date it to c.1902–1903, making it among the earliest picture postcards of this celebrated Sussex ruin.
