Postcard Dover Castle England Pre-Linen J. Salmon c1920s Road View #3116

Dover, England1923Pre-linenGood

A winding chalk-dust road curves beneath the muscular ramparts of Dover Castle — England's mightiest medieval fortress — in this atmospheric sepia real-photo view from the early 1920s. Telegraph poles march up the hill in silhouette, a horse-drawn cart rests in the left foreground, and an early motor car kicks up dust on the right, perfectly framing the transition between two eras. The great keep and the outer curtain wall of the castle, perched dramatically on Castle Hill above the English Channel, loom over the scene with unmistakable authority. Dover Castle's strategic importance stretched from Roman times through both World Wars — its tunnels beneath the cliff served as Churchill's secret command post during Operation Dynamo in 1940. The card was printed and published by J. Salmon of Sevenoaks, England, one of the most respected British postcard houses of the Golden Age, and carries card number 3116 in their topographic series.
