Antique & Vintage Postcards

Villagers wrapped in winter coats pick their way through fresh snow toward the lychgate of Pulborough Church, West Sussex, in this tender watercolour scene painted by C. Essenhigh Corke — one of J. Salmon's most beloved artists of the Edwardian era. The church tower rises serene and golden against a grey sky, bare oaks cling to drifts of white, and warm amber figures animate the foreground with quiet village life — it is a scene that could hang in any parlour as readily as travel through the Royal Mail. The reverse carries a charming handwritten inscription in clear copperplate: "Ada with love & best wishes from Grace" — a small act of Edwardian affection now preserved across more than a century. The publisher's side-printed text confirms this as an original watercolour drawing by C. Essenhigh Corke, card number 594, printed and published by J. Salmon of Sevenoaks. The back format — "This space may be used for Communication in the British Isles" — is a transitional undivided/early divided back, dating this to approximately 1902–1907.
