Antique & Vintage Postcards

Framed by two massive bronze colonial bells hanging in a crumbling brick belfry open to a cerulean Oaxacan sky, a young woman in the embroidered huipil and layered skirts of the Huautleca regional costume gazes serenely upward — photographer Luis Márquez at his most theatrical, conjuring the timeless soul of Oaxacan culture for a mid-century audience hungry for romantic Mexico. Márquez (1899–1978) was one of Mexico's foremost ethnographic photographers, and his "Belle and Bells" series for Publicaciones Fischgrund became iconic postcards sold throughout the republic. The huipil's vivid embroidery — scarlet roses, blue and yellow borders — pops against the warm terracotta brick, while the patinated bronze bells loom with monumental gravity. This example is unused, crisp, and unaddressed, making it a clean example of the Arco Iris series by one of Mexico's most collected postcard photographers.
