Antique & Vintage Postcards

Hundreds of pilgrims in traditional Abruzzese costume crowd the sunbaked piazza before the austere stone sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Incoronata outside Vasto, in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy, while a white horse stands patiently at a carriage near the church portal — a scene of living folk faith that has changed little since the medieval era. Superimposed in the upper-left corner is a sumptuous oval medallion portrait of the venerated image herself: the crowned Madonna dell'Incoronata, richly adorned in gold filigree, red roses, and a deep teal mantle, her expression serene beneath an elaborate baroque crown. This annual festa drew devout faithful from across the Abruzzo hills; the card dates from the height of the picture-postcard collecting craze in Italy, ca. 1900–1910. Published by L. Anelli, Edit. (Vasto), the principal local postcard publisher of the era. The reverse is unused — blank and clean — with the pre-divided-back "Cartolina postale / Carte postale" format indicating production before approximately 1906, though the card's style suggests ca. 1905–1910 transitional period.
