Postcard 1907 SS Deutschland Hamburg Amerika Linie Dinner Menu Willy Stöwer

At Sea (North Atlantic), SS Deutschland1907Pre-linenGood

On the evening of Tuesday, October 1st, 1907, first-class passengers aboard the express steamer Deutschland — at that moment one of the fastest ocean liners afloat, holder of the Blue Riband — sat down to a dinner that opened with Russian caviar in an ice block and moved through turtle soup, larded loin of beef à la Parisienne, hardshell crawfish à la General Dufour, calf's sweetbread en cocotte, fillets of pheasant with truffle sauce, Brunswick asparagus, and closed with illuminated ice cream à la Nesselrode and Queen Tart: a menu that reads like an Edwardian fantasy. The cover of this fold-open menu card bears a dramatic maritime illustration — a powerful steamship plowing through heavy swells — printed from a drawing by the celebrated German marine painter Willy Stöwer, published by Kutzner & Berger of Berlin for the Hamburg-Amerika Linie (HAPAG). The HAPAG anchor logo appears at bottom center, card no. F205 / No. 225. The interior text is bilingual German and English, captained by C. Kaempff.
