Postcard 1940s RPPC Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral DF Tarjeta Postal

Mexico City, Mexico1945RPPCGood

Twin baroque bell towers pierce a cloudy Mexican sky in this stunning real-photo postcard of the Catedral Metropolitana de México — the largest cathedral in the Americas, built atop the ruins of the Aztec Templo Mayor beginning in 1573. The sepia-toned photograph captures the ornate Churrigueresque façade in extraordinary architectural detail, a fountain and strolling pedestrians animating the Zócalo foreground, vintage automobiles lining the periphery suggesting a mid-1940s date. The card bears catalog number 1288 and the "Tarjeta Postal" imprint with a stamp box marked "SELLO," indicating it was printed for the Mexican domestic market. Never mailed, this blank-backed RPPC is a museum-quality time capsule of colonial grandeur and daily life in the Federal District.
