Postcard c.1910 Pre-Linen Kempten im Allgäu Panoramic View Bavaria Germany

Kempten im Allgäu, Bavaria, Germany1910Pre-linenGood

A sweeping pre-linen panorama of Kempten im Allgäu unfolds across this early-twentieth-century card — the twin Baroque towers of the Basilika St. Lorenz and the onion-domed Stiftskirche rising above a dense spread of steep-roofed burgher houses, timber-frame farm buildings in the foreground, and the rolling foothills of the Allgäu Alps fading into a pale sky beyond. Kempten, one of Germany's oldest cities and a Roman settlement known as Cambodunum, is captured here in its pre-WWI provincial calm, its ecclesiastical skyline virtually unchanged since the Thirty Years' War. The card bears no written message and appears to have been a collector or dealer stock copy, unaddressed and unmailed, preserving the image in crisp, high-contrast monochrome typical of German Lichtdruck (collotype) printing of the era.
