Postcard 1905 SMS Furst Bismarck German Imperial Navy Battleship Oilette Art

At sea / German Imperial Navy1905Pre-linenGood

A powerful bow-on view of the Imperial German armored cruiser SMS Fürst Bismarck surging through heavy green seas, smoke billowing from her stacks and the Imperial German ensign flying from her mast — a dramatic chromolithographic rendering that captures the Wilhelmine naval pride at its height. Artist Hans Hörnigk, working in Berlin in 1905, rendered the vessel with striking technical accuracy: the distinctive twin forward turrets, the ram bow cutting white spray, and tiny silhouetted sailors at the rail convey real scale and menace. SMS Fürst Bismarck was Germany's first purpose-built armored cruiser, launched in 1897 and serving as flagship of the East Asia Squadron before returning to home waters — a potent symbol of Kaiser Wilhelm II's Weltpolitik ambitions. In the lower left of the composition a low, dark vessel — possibly a torpedo boat — trails in the cruiser's wake, adding narrative tension. The card is part of the Raphael Tuck & Sons "Oilette" series, the premium chromolithographic postcard line of the era, printed in Berlin and identified as series II.
