Burghausen's Hof der Königlichen Burg (courtyard of the royal castle) stretches over 1,000 meters along a ridge above the Salzach River on the Austrian border, and this card — dated 22 June 1911 and numbered No. III in a series — was sent by Charles to a young woman named Jess in Washington, D.C., with the cheerful message "Hearty wishes from the loafer kindergarden!" scrawled across the image in English. The reverse bears a 10-Heller Franz Joseph stamp of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, postmarked and addressed to Miss Jess Bloomer at 1017 10th St. N.W., Washington, D.C., U.S.A. — a transatlantic social postcard that crossed empires.
