Postcard 1911 Burghausen Hof der Koniglichen Burg Bavaria Austria Stamp Used

Burghausen, Bavaria, Germany1911Pre-linenGood

Warm ochres and dusty terracottas bring Burghausen's medieval royal courtyard to life in this richly printed Kunstkarte lithograph — a gentleman in a dark coat and hat strolls with his small black dog beneath the ancient stone archway of one of the world's longest castle complexes, while women in Bavarian dress and workmen populate the cobbled yard beyond. Burghausen's Hof der Königlichen Burg (courtyard of the royal castle) stretches over 1,000 meters along a ridge above the Salzach River on the Austrian border, and this card — dated 22 June 1911 and numbered No. III in a series — was sent by Charles to a young woman named Jess in Washington, D.C., with the cheerful message "Hearty wishes from the loafer kindergarden!" scrawled across the image in English. The reverse bears a 10-Heller Franz Joseph stamp of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, postmarked and addressed to Miss Jess Bloomer at 1017 10th St. N.W., Washington, D.C., U.S.A. — a transatlantic social postcard that crossed empires. Artist P. Kraemer's delicate figures and warm palette make this a fine example of turn-of-the-century Bavarian topographic art publishing.
