Postcard 1930 Linen Richfield Oil Building Los Angeles CA Night Art Deco

Los Angeles, USA1930LinenExcellent

Los Angeles blazes with oil-boom confidence in this stunning nighttime linen view of the Richfield Oil Company Building, its black-and-gold Art Deco tower illuminated like a jeweled scepter against a deep cobalt sky — searchlight beams slashing upward from the crown where the vertical "RICHFIELD" sign glows in neon orange, beacon of an industry and an era. Completed in 1929 and designed by Morgan, Walls & Clements in a boldly ornamental Art Deco style clad entirely in black tile with gold terra cotta trim, the Richfield Tower was one of the most photographed buildings in California during the 1930s, its 40-million-candle-power aviation beacon visible for miles. The reverse text explains it was "one of 32 Neon Towers, every 50 miles from Mexico to Canada" — a continental highway marking system as audacious as the building itself. Tragically demolished in 1968 to make way for the ARCO Plaza, the Richfield Tower survives today only in images like this one. Published by Western Publishing & Novelty Co., catalog number 1528-30, this unused linen card is a premier piece of Los Angeles architectural history.
