Postcard 1909 La Catedral y el Sagrario Mexico City Leleplatner Berk Mailed TX

Mexico City, Mexico1909Pre-linenGood

Freshly hand-tinted in soft aqua and olive tones, this early divided-back postcard captures Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral and the adjoining Sagrario Metropolitano in their full Zócalo grandeur — twin baroque towers, a neoclassical dome, and centuries of accumulated stone all bathed in the gentle colorist's brush. Published by Leleplatner Berk (Apartado 909, México), one of the capital's prominent early-century postcard houses, card no. 175 was mailed from Mexico City in 1909, addressed to Miss Ella in San Antonio, Texas — care of a Mr. Saul — carrying a brief message in Spanish that reads in part "aquí ya yo también…" suggesting the sender was similarly enjoying the city. The Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest in the Americas, had stood on the north side of the Zócalo since the sixteenth century; this view, taken from the southeast, shows both the cathedral's main façade and the ornate Churrigueresque portal of the Sagrario to its right.
