RPPC Postcard 1930s Pyramid of the Sun Teotihuacan Mexico Desentis Jr.

Teotihuacan, Mexico1940RPPCGood

Wildflowers bloom in the foreground of this hauntingly beautiful real-photo postcard, framing the massive stepped silhouette of the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan against a brooding, cloud-streaked sky — a composition that feels more fine-art photograph than tourist souvenir. Photographer Desentis Jr. captured this scene sometime in the 1930s–1940s, when Teotihuacan was still in the early stages of modern archaeological excavation; the raw earthen slopes visible at the pyramid's base hint at ongoing dig work of the era. The Pyramid of the Sun, rising some 216 feet and dating to roughly 200 CE, was the largest structure in the pre-Columbian Western Hemisphere at the time of the Spanish conquest. A second smaller pyramid — almost certainly the Pyramid of the Moon — is visible on the right horizon. The card was printed on ANSCO photo paper (a well-regarded American photographic paper brand), indicating professional production, and bears the catalog number 302 in the lower caption margin.
