Postcard 1935 RPPC Mexico City Fuente El Salto del Agua Fountain Osuna

Mexico City, Mexico1935RPPCGood

A masterpiece of colonial engineering frozen in silver gelatin — the Fuente El Salto del Agua erupts from a Mexico City street corner in this striking 1935 real-photo postcard, its baroque stonework alive with sculpted mermaids, twisted columns, crowned finials, and a bold coat of arms presiding over the whole spectacle. Built in 1779 to mark the terminus of the Chapultepec aqueduct, the fountain was the city's grandest public water monument; by the time photographer Osuna trained his lens on it, tram rails gleamed in the pavement and a lechería (dairy shop) had opened next door — a couple pausing on its balcony lending an intimate, unhurried humanity to the scene. The card was mailed on 20 May 1935 from Mexico City to Howard in Rochester, New York, bearing a 4-centavo commemorative stamp celebrating 25 years of the Mexican Revolution (1910–1934 series, Scott #MX 714 area).
