Antique & Vintage Postcards

A lone figure in a dark coat stands sentinel beside a stone bridge parapet as the ancient city walls and towers of Rothenburg ob der Tauber march into a soft springtime sky — this hand-colored "Gruss aus" greeting card, published by J.P. Peter'sche Buchdruckerei right in Rothenburg, captures the medieval town at the height of its romantic rediscovery by German tourists around 1900. The Stadtmauer-Parthie (city wall section) depicted is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Europe. The reverse is entirely blank save the Art Nouveau red "Postkarte." imprint — an undivided, unposted card from the earliest postcard era, consistent with pre-1900 printing when the back was reserved solely for the address.
