Antique & Vintage Postcards

This rare black-and-white postcard documents the Hamburg birthplace of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy — born in this very brick corner building on 3 February 1809 — as it appeared in the early twentieth century, its ground floor occupied by a beer distributor and a newsstand piled with papers, the commemorative plaque barely visible mid-facade. Issued likely around the centenary of the composer's birth in 1909, the card is a piece of musical history: the building at Große Michaelisstraße, Hamburg was subsequently demolished, making photographic records like this irreplaceable. The reverse bears a clean divided-back layout but was never posted or written upon, preserving it in pristine archival condition.
