Postcard 1899 Düppel Denkmal Monument Dybbøl Germany Deutsche Reichspost

Dybbøl (Düppel), Schleswig, Germany/Denmark border region1899Pre-linenGood

A solemn Gothic spire rises over the Schleswig countryside in this evocative early real-photo-style card of the Düppel Denkmal — the monument erected to commemorate Prussia's decisive 1864 victory over Denmark at the Battle of Dybbøl, a turning point that reshaped the map of northern Europe. The tower's octagonal base is adorned with military relief carvings and flanked by martial statues; tiny figures stand at the iron railing below, dwarfed by the stone. Published by Verlag Hackbarth, Düppelbølls, this undivided-back card carries a handwritten message in period German script on its face, sent from Sønderborg and addressed to a recipient in Mannheim. The stamp — a 5-Pfennig Deutsche Reichspost numeral issue — is cleanly cancelled, and a Mannheim arrival postmark is visible on the reverse, dating the mailing to circa 1899–1901.
