Postcard 1899 Wiesbaden Das Rathaus City Hall Germany Antique Pre-Linen Used

Wiesbaden, Germany1899Pre-linenFair-Good

In the dying light of the 19th century — postmarked May 15, 1899 — this striking blue-toned view of Wiesbaden's imposing Rathaus (City Hall) captures the monumental German Renaissance Revival structure at its newly-built grandeur, a horse-drawn cart clip-clopping across the broad cobbled plaza in the foreground lending irresistible period charm. The building, completed in 1887 to designs by Georg von Hauberrisser, bristles with turrets, dormers, and rusticated stonework — a confident symbol of Wilhelmine civic ambition. Published by Dr. Trenkler & Co. of Leipzig, one of the most prolific and respected German postcard publishers of the era, this early card predates the "golden age" postcard boom and was sent from Wiesbaden to "Heinrich Wichner, Ingenieur, Frankfurt a/M," a professional man who may well have known the building from business visits. The Frankfurt arrival cancel of the same date confirms same-day delivery — a testament to the efficiency of the Imperial German postal system.
