Antique & Vintage Postcards

A Tehuana in full ceremonial dress — white lace huipil grande fanning like a halo behind her head, red embroidered skirt cascading to the ground, roses cradled in both arms — stands before a tropical garden with painted pottery and banana palms, the iconic image of Tehuantepec that made it famous worldwide. This vivid illustrated card, No. 94 in the Tipos Mexicanos series published in Mexico City, was sent on November 9, 1949 by Lupita, writing from the Hotel del Prado in Mexico City — then one of the city's most glamorous addresses, famous for Diego Rivera's Dream of a Sunday Afternoon mural. Lupita tells her friend she is working at the hotel "like a typist girl," praises the beauty of all Mexico, and sends regards to "the girls at Sears." The card is addressed simply to "Miss Govin," no street address given.
