Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rising in stepped tiers of latticed stonework against a cloud-filled sky, the celebrated El Palomar — the Pigeon House or Dovecote — at the ancient Maya city of Uxmal in Yucatán gazes down through a corbeled arch over a carpet of wildflowers in this hand-painted illustrated card by Mexican artist M. Cirerol, its naive yet evocative style perfectly capturing the romantic ruin-mania of mid-century archaeological tourism. Sent on 28 November 1955 by Józef and Bronia, Polish visitors on a Mexican holiday, to Adele in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria, the message is written in Polish: "We are on vacation in Mexico for a few days. Here are ruins from centuries before Christ." The card traveled from the Yucatán Peninsula to Lower Austria, a remarkable Cold War-era journey for a handmade tourist card.
