RPPC Postcard Xochimilco Mexico Canal Church Floating Gardens 1930s-40s

Xochimilco, Mexico City, Mexico1940RPPCGood

Three figures in white cotton and broad straw hats rest at the canal's edge, their reflections rippling in the still water beside the ancient chinampas — the legendary "floating gardens" of Xochimilco — while a centuries-old domed church and soaring Lombardy poplars rise against a bright Mexican sky. This real photo postcard (RPPC) captures Xochimilco at its most idyllic, before the waterways were crowded with tourist trajineras, when locals still sat quietly at the water's edge. Xochimilco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves the pre-Aztec agricultural canal system dating back over a thousand years; the church visible here is likely the colonial-era parish of San Bernardino de Siena. The CIP (Mexico) publisher mark and the multilingual back format — Post Card / Carte Postale / Cartolina Postale / Tarjeta Postal / Postkarte — suggest this card was produced for an international tourist market in the 1930s–40s. A handwritten price notation of "2.00" appears in pencil at top right of the back.
