Postcard Pwllheli From The Garn Wales 1949 Valentine's Used RPPC-Style W.329

Pwllheli, Gwynedd (Caernarvonshire), Wales, UK1949Pre-linenFair-Good

From a windswept hilltop called Y Garn, the Welsh market town of Pwllheli unfolds in sweeping panorama — terraced Victorian slate-roofed houses cascade down toward the broad tidal estuary of Cardigan Bay, while a Gothic-windowed chapel anchors the mid-ground and distant sand dunes shimmer toward the Llŷn Peninsula coast. This evocative elevated view, numbered W.329 in Valentine's extensive Welsh series, was posted on 20 June 1949 by a holidaymaker named Nancy to Mr & Mrs P. in Salford, Lancashire — she scrawls that she's "having a very nice time, the country is lovely but the tide is only and the cattle is interesting," a wonderfully candid tourist's verdict on this remote Welsh-speaking corner of Britain. The 2½d orange King George VI stamp is neatly cancelled with a Caernarvonshire slogan postmark, adding philatelic interest to an already charming social-history piece.
