Postcard Norway Borgund Gamle Stavkirke Stave Church RPPC 1927 Carl Normann

Borgund (Lærdal), Sogn og Fjordane, Norway1927RPPCExcellent

Rising like a dark forest creature against the stark Norwegian mountains, the Borgund Stave Church — "gamle Stavkirke," the old stave church — presents its extraordinary layered dragon-prow silhouette in this crisp 1927 real-photo postcard by the celebrated Norwegian photographer Carl Normann of Hamar. One of the best-preserved medieval wooden stave churches in the world, Borgund was built around 1180 CE in Lærdal, Sogn og Fjordane, and its concentric rooflines, carved dragon-head finials, and shingled walls make it among the most photographed structures in Scandinavia. Normann's composition is masterfully direct: the church fills the frame almost entirely, the rough-laid stone boundary wall in the foreground providing grounding texture against the soaring timber above, while a valley settlement is just visible in the misty background. The copyright notice reads "Eneret 1927 / Carl Normann, Hamar," confirming this as an authorised studio print, numbered 7119 in his extensive Norwegian landscapes series.
