Postcard Norway Fantoft Stavkirke ved Bergen Stave Church RPPC K. Knudsen & Co

Fantoft (near Bergen), Hordaland, Norway1910RPPCGood

All dragon heads, tiered rooflines, and soaring spire, the Fantoft Stave Church near Bergen erupts upward into a pale Norwegian sky in this stunning real-photo postcard by K. Knudsen & Co — the Bergen photography house whose "Eneberettiget" (exclusively licensed) imprimatur appears in the lower right. Originally built in Fortun, Sogn, around 1150 CE and relocated to its hilltop site at Fantoft in 1883, the church became one of the defining tourist images of Norway's romantic national revival. Knudsen's composition captures the arcade of rounded stone columns along the nave's exterior gallery — a rare feature — while sharp morning light rakes across the wooden shingles to reveal every hand-split surface. Tragically, the original church was destroyed by arson in 1992 and painstakingly reconstructed; this pre-WWII photograph therefore documents the authentic medieval fabric that was lost, giving it a poignant archival dimension beyond its considerable aesthetic appeal. The card is numbered No. 11 in Knudsen's Bergen series.
