Postcard 1920s Madrid Puerta del Sol Spain Trams RPPC Grafos Publisher

Madrid, Spain1925Pre-linenGood

Trams thread through the sunlit heart of Madrid in this beautifully composed real-photo-style view of the Puerta del Sol, likely captured in the early-to-mid 1920s when the square buzzed with electric trams, early automobiles, and crowds of pedestrians going about their daily lives beneath the iconic clock tower of the Real Casa de Correos. The sepia-toned image (card no. 61) looks north-northwest from an elevated vantage, capturing the full sweep of the plaza — the "Gate of the Sun" — which served as Spain's symbolic kilometre zero. On the right, the neoclassical Casa de Correos (now the regional government seat) anchors the composition, its clock tower perfectly sharp. A cinema sign reading "CINZ—" is visible upper-left, a glimpse of Madrid's booming early entertainment culture. The back is entirely unwritten, printed simply "Grafos. Madrid." in elegant italics, suggesting the card was sold as a souvenir and never sent.
