Antique & Vintage Postcards

From the height of a surrounding building, the sweeping grandeur of Barcelona's Plaza de Cataluña — the city's great central square, inaugurated in its modern form in 1929 — unfolds in crisp real-photo detail: formal gardens with sculpted fountains, radiating pathways, clusters of pedestrians in 1930s dress, and a ring of early automobiles parked along the perimeter, while the monumental Hotel Ritz and surrounding Belle Époque buildings close the horizon. This is one of the finest real-photo views of the square in its earliest fully-completed state, the stone columns and balustraded terrace of the main entrance still gleaming and new. The reverse reveals the card's remarkable provenance: mailed from Barcelona on 9 July 1932 to Eduard W. in Brunn a/Geb., Austria, bearing a 30-céntimos stamp of the Spanish Second Republic (República Española) depicting the Spanish statesman and scholar Pablo Iglesias or possibly Nicolás Salmerón — a stamp issued in 1931–1932. The message, written in German, reads warmly: "Schicke allen herzliche Grüsse von der schönen Francia / Barcelona, 9/Jul. 1932 / Willy." The sender, Willy, sends heartfelt greetings from "beautiful France/España."
