Postcard Scheveningen Visschers Fishermen's Alley Netherlands c1905 Color

Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands1907Pre-linenGood

Laundry day in the fishermen's quarter of Scheveningen — the great North Sea fishing port and seaside resort just west of The Hague — fills this charming hand-tinted card with the textures of working-class Dutch life: wooden drying racks lean against every facade of the narrow brick lane, white smocks and dark woolen aprons billow in the sea air, wooden barrels and tin pails crowd the cobbles, and a small child in a white bonnet peers down the alley toward the camera. The red-tiled roofs of the "Visscherswoningen" (fishermen's dwellings) crowd close on either side, their brick facades still painted in the ochre and red common to the quarter before the great 20th-century redevelopments swept it away. Published by Weenenk & Snel of Den Haag, one of the leading Dutch postcard houses of the Edwardian era, this unused card preserves a street scene of the old Scheveningen fishing village that has largely vanished.
