Postcard 1901 Souvenir de Monte-Carlo Vue Generale Monaco German Message

Monte-Carlo, Monaco1902Pre-linenGood

Sent from the glamorous principality of Monaco at the very dawn of the picture postcard era, this striking Souvenir de Monte-Carlo card presents a sweeping photographic panorama — Vue générale de Monte-Carlo — framed by a dramatic Mediterranean pine, flowering scrub, and the glittering bay beyond, all rendered in the fine halftone gravure that made publisher L. Gires's Monaco views among the most coveted of the period. Written in a flowing German hand, the sender — who signs simply as Isidor — writes warmly to a young woman named Jenny: "Liebe Jenny, Ich habe noch einige Karten von Monte Carlo bei mir vorgefunden, hoffentlich ist dir für deine Sammlung brauchbar. Grüß Isidor" — "Dear Jenny, I found a few more Monte Carlo cards with me, hopefully useful for your collection. Greetings, Isidor." The reverse shows it was addressed and posted to Jenny at Lehterstr. 48c, Berlin N.W. 40, and bears a Monaco 10-centime stamp cancelled at what appears to be Monte-Carlo, with a Berlin arrival cancel of 6 January 1902 — a remarkable survival with both cancels intact. The card predates the divided-back era and carries the classic Ce côté est exclusivement réservé à l'adresse French convention, confirming an early 1901–1902 date.
