Postcard 1910 Hooge Sluis Amsterdam Netherlands Briefkaart Dutch Canal Bridge

Amsterdam, Netherlands1910Pre-linenFair-Good

A vivid hand-coloured Dutch Briefkaart presents the grand sweep of the Hooge Sluis — the High Lock — in Amsterdam, with the ornate iron-and-glass facade of the Paleis voor Volksvlijt (Palace of Industry) dominating the left horizon, its soaring arched windows reflecting Amsterdam's ambitions as an industrial and cultural capital at the turn of the century; the arched stone bridge crossing the canal is alive with strolling figures, horse-drawn vehicles, and the warm amber tones of early Dutch colour printing at its finest. The card was sent by G.J. (Bossman), writing from Amsterdam, to a gentleman named A. ten Horst at Rijssandershoek, Nijverdal — a small textile-industry town in Overijssel — in what appears to be a friendly greeting exchange. The reverse is a classic Dutch Briefkaart – Drukwerk format with Weltpostverein / Union Postale Universelle designation, placing it in the 1905–1915 window. Notably, the Paleis voor Volksvlijt depicted burned to the ground in 1929, making pre-fire views of this beloved Amsterdam landmark especially sought-after by collectors.
