Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two barn swallows dive toward each other in perfect mirror symmetry, each gripping a small banner displaying a leafy green numeral "1" — set against a carpet of powder-blue forget-me-nots with gold centers that fills every inch of this enchanting embossed chromolithograph New Year postcard. The swallows are rendered with remarkable naturalism, their russet cheeks and steel-blue wings catching the light, while the forget-me-not field creates a dreamy, almost impressionistic background. Initialed "H.a.R." in pencil at lower right of the front — a collector's or sender's mark that adds personal character. The card is unused with a blank divided back, likely dating to c. 1907–1910 based on back format and printing style. Barn swallows were potent symbols of good fortune and the returning New Year in Edwardian greeting culture, making this a particularly symbolic and visually arresting example of the genre.
