1909 Christmas Kittens Embossed Postcard Cats Holly Fond Greetings Boulder CO

Boulder, Colorado, USA1909Pre-linenGood

Two wide-eyed tabby kittens peer out from a gilded oval medallion wreathed in holly — a charming piece of Edwardian sentimentality mailed from Boulder, Colorado on December 24, 1909, arriving just in time for Christmas morning. The card is richly embossed, with the holly leaves and berries raised in vivid green and red against a cream ground, and the kittens rendered with a delicate, almost painterly softness — each tiny pink nose and blue eye carefully articulated. The message side carries a looping, cursive holiday note addressed to a Miss named what appears to be "Fian" or "Pian" Martin of Rope Mills, New York, St. Lawrence County — a small upstate New York community, adding a lovely cross-country human thread to this piece. The one-cent Benjamin Franklin green stamp (Scott #331) is lightly cancelled with the Boulder, Colorado machine cancel dated DEC 24, 1909. Animal and cat-themed holiday postcards from the golden age of the postcard craze (1905–1915) remain among the most collected categories, and embossed examples with clear postmarks command consistent premiums.
