Postcard 1936 Royal Gorge World's Highest Bridge Canon City Colorado Linen

Canon City, Colorado, USA1936LinenFair-Good

A suspension bridge threads impossibly across the black void of the Royal Gorge, the Arkansas River a thin silver ribbon 1,053 feet below — this 1936 linen-era card immortalizes what was then the world's highest bridge just seven years after its 1929 construction, when it was still a genuine engineering marvel drawing visitors from across the nation. The tinted linen finish, printed by the Teich-Chicago firm, gives the canyon's rust-and-amber walls an almost painterly drama. On the back, a writer named Berta posted this from Manitou, Colorado on June 26, 1936, dashing off a cheerful note to Mr. and Mrs. Stringer in Port Huron, Michigan — confessing she no longer knows how to live in a house after so long camping out, and announcing the party is heading home soon.
