RPPC Postcard c1920s Deer Bucks Hunting Red Bluff CA J.H. Eastman T-1523

Red Bluff, California, USA1925RPPCGood

Three magnificent mule deer bucks pause in a sun-dappled forest clearing, one bold buck staring directly into J.H. Eastman's lens as if daring the viewer to try their luck — the caption scratched into the emulsion says it all: Hunting? "Not Bad!" This atmospheric real photo postcard captures Northern California wildlife in its prime, likely shot in the timber country around Red Bluff, Tehama County, in the 1920s. Eastman was a prolific regional photographer whose numbered RPPC series documented California landscapes and wildlife for the tourist trade; card number T-1523 places this well within his documented output. The velvet-antlered bucks in the background, the towering conifers, and the soft sepia tones give this card a genuine field-photography energy rarely achieved in the studio-staged wildlife cards of the era. A penciled note on the reverse — apparently added by a later owner — identifies the subjects as "Deers (mounted heads) on sale in Red Bluff, Calif. (on Main Street)," a detail that adds a bittersweet layer of local commerce to what reads as a celebration of abundance in the wild.
