Postcard 1938 Linen Coast Royal Laguna Beach CA Clifftop Villa Ocean View

Laguna Beach, California, USA1938LinenGood

Perched dramatically above the Pacific, this vivid linen-era view of Coast Royal captures everything that made Laguna Beach the jewel of Southern California — a whitewashed Spanish Colonial villa tumbling down flower-blanketed cliffs toward a sandy cove, a red-domed bell tower amid the gardens, and the deep cerulean ocean stretching to the horizon. Curt Teich's signature chromolithographic palette makes the bougainvillea and wildflowers almost electric against the sandy bluffs. The card carries a warm human story: postmarked Laguna Beach, September 10, 1938, it was dashed off on a Saturday by a traveler named Jade to her friend Marjorie in Washington, D.C. — "I am having the time of my life and practically live at the beach," she writes, staying high on the hill overlooking the ocean, "perfectly beautiful," and "guilty to hate to leave." Time, she laments, passes much too quickly. The Coast Royal complex was a beloved landmark on the Laguna cliffs, and cards of this specific view are modestly sought by California coastal collectors.
