Postcard Chrome MacArthur Park Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles CA 1950s Aerial

Los Angeles, California, USA1953ChromeExcellent

Soaring above the palm-lined boulevard, this vivid chrome-era aerial view captures MacArthur Park and Wilshire Boulevard at their mid-century prime — the lake shimmering in deep cerulean beside manicured lawns, while downtown Los Angeles rises confidently on the horizon. Wilshire Boulevard, the great democratic thoroughfare linking the city's heart to Beverly Hills and the sands of Santa Monica, threads through the frame like a river of ambition, dotted with period automobiles. The park, named for General Douglas MacArthur in 1942 (formerly Westlake Park), was a beloved civic jewel and weekend gathering place for Angelenos of every background, its two lake basins and lush plantings a counterpoint to the urban energy pressing in from all sides. The Curteich "3-D Natural Color" printing process gives the image its characteristic saturated depth, a hallmark of postcard collecting's linen-to-chrome golden transition.
